The codes
| Code | Bikes | From age |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Up to 125cc | 16 |
| A | Over 125cc, such as 150cc and 200cc delivery bikes | 18 |
Code A also covers smaller bikes, so it’s the one to get if you’re 18 or older. Our Velocity 150 needs Code A.
How to get it
- Learner’s licence. Book the learner’s test at a driving licence testing centre (DLTC). You fill in a form, do an eye test, and answer multiple-choice questions on road signs, rules of the road and the bike’s controls. Ask for the motorcycle learner’s licence.
- Practise. A learner’s licence is valid for 24 months. You may not carry a passenger on it.
- Driving test. Book the K53 motorcycle test for Code A1 or A at a DLTC. You need your learner’s licence for the same kind of bike.
- Licence card. Once you pass, you apply for your licence card. Keep it valid: the apps check expiry dates.
Fees differ by province. Your DLTC will tell you what to bring and what it costs.
What the apps and bike companies ask for
- Uber Eats lists Code A or A1, a learner’s licence (Code 1), a temporary licence or an International Driving Permit. See a bike for Uber Eats.
- Bike Connectors needs a full licence: Code A for the 150cc bikes, A1 or A for 125cc.
- Other apps and insurers set their own rules: check before you sign up.
