What a delivery bike costs a week

Before you take a bike, work out what you’ll spend every week and what’s left. Here are the real numbers for a full-time rider on a 150cc delivery bike.

A week on a Velocity 150 Delivery Package

Full-time riding: 120 km a day, 6 days a week (720 km).

CostA week
Bike payment over 18 months, with insurance, tracker and the maintenance planR740
Petrol at R30.25 a litre, 2.4 L/100 kmabout R523
Tyres: R800 to R1,800 a set, every few monthsvaries
Phone data, traffic finesyours
Bike and petrolabout R1 263

Without the maintenance plan

The payment drops to R473 a week, but you pay for services yourself. At about R740 a service every 3 000 km, that’s roughly R178 a week for a full-time rider, plus brake pads, chains and other wear parts. With the plan, those are covered, and you get a loan bike if a repair takes more than a day.

What’s left

Riders commonly report earning R2,500 to R5,000 a week before costs. On a R3 500 week:

EarningsR3 500
Bike payment−R740
Petrol−R523
Left, before tyres, data and finesR2 237

If you rent instead, the R550 to R750 a week is gone for good. With rent-to-own, after 18 months the payment stops and the bike is yours.
